My Trip to the Cane Fields
Pile of old pictures + mildew = create web log.
Thought this would be a good place to store some old photos of a vacation to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, South Africa,Venezuela, and Florida. Don't understand why, but whenever I try to add to the family albums the brilliantly composed photos of the assorted tractors and irrigation ditches discovered at Hippo Valley sugar mill ..the family complains.
A blog will be as as good a place as any.
I need some help organizing my thoughts...so here goes.
Getting old...I could kick off anyday now. Besides, when sugar prices hit USD 1.00 a pound the sugar-eating world will want to know what it looked like at the bottom of a 20 year bear market.
Pictures: Hippo Valley Estates Limited (Zimbabwe) pics to follow.
Subject: 1997 trip to visit world's sugar plantations and mills.
First Stop: Hippo Valley Estates Limited
Description:
"Hippo Valley Estates was started as a citrus farm back in the '60s and is now one of the largest farms in Zimbabwe. Located near Chiredzi, in the land of sugar cane, the farm is a four-hour drive south of the capital, Harare. Though sugar cane is not a major crop in Zimbabwe it is more lucrative, and overtook citrus products. Today, sugar cane is almost the sole crop at Hippo Valley - all 12,400 hectares of it. "
